Ndebele is the name given to two different languages, the Southern Ndebele language spoken in South Africa and the Northern Ndebele language spoken in Zimbabwe. Both languages belong to the Nguni group of Bantu languages. However, they have some significant differences.

Southern Ndebele, also known as Transvaal Ndebele or Nrebele, is one of the official languages of South Africa. Southern Ndebele is spoken by the amaNdebele people of South Africa, who live mainly in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Limpopo, and the North West Province. The language is spoken by close to 600,000 people in South Africa. Southern Ndebele is not widely spoken and does not enjoy the same prominence in education and official publications as languages such as Afrikaans, English, isiZulu, or isiXhosa. Southern Ndebele could be said to be more akin to the various languages of the Sotho- Tswana group, such as Sotho or Lozi.

Northern Ndebele is spoken by about 1.5 million people in Zimbabwe. It is usually referred to as Northern Ndebele to differentiate it from Southern Ndebele. It can also be known as Tebele, Sindebele or Isinde’bele. This language is also spoken by just over 8,000 people in Botswana. Northern Ndebele combines many aspects of Zulu. For this reason, Northern Ndebele is in many ways closer to Zulu than to the southern language, both in terms of construction and vocabulary.
